Four office buildings along S. California Avenue have been demolished to construct 180 new homes for Stanford faculty, including 68 detached single family homes and 112 condominium homes. The new homes are a result of the 2005 Mayfield Development Agreement between the City of Palo Alto and Stanford University. More information about the Mayfield Development Agreement can be found on the City of Palo Alto website.
Demolition of the existing buildings was completed in spring 2015. Construction of the condominium homes began in summer 2015. Construction of the first single family homes began in fall 2015. First home delivery is anticipated in early 2017. All 180 homes are anticipated to be complete in late 2018.
To ensure storm water protection, the site has been prepared for forecasted rain events by stabilizing all open land at the upper site with geo-matrix material and straw waddle to mitigate erosion. A holding pond has been created for storm water run-off collection. The storm water runoff from this pond is tested for turbidity and pH. If test results are compliant with regulatory requirements, the water drains through the on-site storm water pipes and outfalls to the existing storm channel. If the tests are non-compliant, the water is pumped to on-site separator tanks to remove sediment and pH from the storm water until the tests are compliant. Upon compliant testing, the water is drained through the on-site storm water pipes and outfalls to the existing storm channel. NO ground water is being pumped on the site.
Questions and concerns from the local community have recently come to the project’s attention related to environmental conditions at the site. These concerns were sent to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA), the regulatory agency responsible for overseeing the environmental work. The DTSC has thoroughly reviewed these questions and concerns and issued detailed responses. Please click here to view these documents.
